Water, water and more water today. If not fjords or waterfalls, then it was rain.
We've stopped at 2 waterfalls today and ridden through a fair amount of rain, en route to Bergen, I believe Bergen has the unenviable record, of having only 30 dry days per year. Unfortunately, we didn't hit one of them today. To be fair, after about 30 miles of fairly persistent rain, it was dry when we rolled up at the hotel.
Checked in, our first destination was the Floibanen funicular, up the mountain, to grab a view over the city. Sadly, as we left the hotel it started to rain and by the time the funicular had reached the top of the mountain, the cloud had closed in and it was an almost total whiteout. Waiting for a break in the cloud, Knutr bought us both an ice cream cone. It was quite large and dipped in hundreds and thousands. I had licorice ones. By the time that was gone, the cloud had broken just sufficiently to get a glipse of the city beneath us. Most impressive.
Back at sea level we walked along the Bryggen, a quayside housing lots of old wooden buildings. it's a world heritage site. It's quite interesting to see how these buildings are constructed and to peep down the alleyways between them. They were quite useful for dodging the rain too.
The walk back took us through the fish market, where massive spider crabs and lobsters sit in tanks, ready for someone's plate. Choose your fish/shellfish and they will cook it right there in front of you!
Sightseeing over, we popped into a supermarket to buy some beers and then dropped into a pizza restaurant by the hotel, 'enjoying' outside seating, whilst the heavens opened. Yes, we were under cover. A few bedraggled sparrows sat by our feet, waiting for any crumbs we might have to offer and were bold enough to take some pieces of crust from out of our fingers.
It's unclear at the moment what the weather holds. Knutr's online forecast suggests more rain, SKY's satellite forecast says it should be dry. Fingers crossed.
