Day 3

After a fine, dry ride up to Hirtshals, with only one mishap (blame the poxy Tomtom), where we failed to stop at a scheduled fuel stop, we paid a visit to the German bunkers by the light house on the outskirts of the town. One of the paths is lined with what I'm assuming are genuine German boots. The place is quite interesting an quit extensive, among the dunes.

After a quick bite to eat, we made our way to the fiasco that is Fjordline. Check the logs for further details. When we finally boarded we were left to tie down our own bikes. All very well but the majority of the ratchet ties didn't work properly. Clearly people had tried to use them before, without the first clue what to do, so they were jammed. I managed to find 2 with thin enough straps to thread them properly but most peiple struggled. We spent ages trying tie after tie to secure Knutr's bike. In all, there were about 2 dozen bikes in the bowels of the Fjord Cat ferry.

The crossing was quite choppy and you defo needed your sea legs when walking about. As usual, people were bumping into things. Because of the sea conditions the crossing was longer than scheduled, about 2h45. Once we managed to undo the ratchet ties, some with a whack from the wheel chocks, we disembarked and made the short journey to our hotel, the Thon hotel. There's motorcycle parking opposite and we were lucky to get the last spaces. Knutr is in his element, as they have a free coffee machine in the lobby! Not quite as good as the free cookies in my Hilton in Tuscon last December ;-)

As we were quite late arriving and hitting the town, fast food was the order of the evening, so we popped into Maccy D's. Over the way was a bar, called Patrick's. After a quick walk down to the seafront, we went in. The cheapest pints were £9, so we decided to head back to the hotel. First time I've ever seen Knutr walk away from a pint! Hopefully we'll see something at bit more to our liking on our travels. Tomorrow we are headed for Stavanger. Weather looks like being dry, if not exactly warm, 15 degrees expected on arrival. There's a fair bit of riding to do before then though.

Till tomorrow.

  1. Stavanger was very nice. Olde Town but not if Queen Victoria arrives with 200000 tourists at once.

  3. Apologies - it was Queen Elizabeth that blotted out the sky!
